X2: X-Men United (2003)

Related: X-Men (2000), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

This movie should be avoided because it involves and/or promotes profanity (at least 16 instances), blasphemy (God's name is taken in vain at least 10 times), disdain for authority, immodesty, sexual immorality, theft, deceit, evolution, and feminism. Satanic sorcery is promoted under the guise of "special mutant powers," for the superhuman, miraculous abilities the characters are depicted as having can only be attributed to the devil. Since its heroes practice sin, this movie conditions viewers to substitute evil for good and good for evil (Isa. 5:20) by praising evildoers who ought to be despised (Ps. 15:4; Pro. 28:4).

Violations of God's Law

Defiance against God

This movie violates the First Commandment.

  • Sorcery:
    • Xavier is depicted as being able to read people's minds, cause everyone to freeze in time, and use a device called Cerebro by which he is connected to "every living person on the planet"
    • Magneto is depicted as having the power to levitate and control metal and magnetism
    • Jean is depicted as having the power of telekinesis and telepathy, who reads people's minds and moves things with her mind, and who is also a clairvoyant with the ability to sense impending danger. In once scene she communicates to the X-Men telepathically using Xavier as a medium
    • Storm is depicted as having the power to "manipulate the weather at will"—she controls the wind, thunderstorms, lightning, creates tornadoes, and brings cold weather (this is but a blasphemous usurpation of God's prerogative, who alone possesses such power)
    • Pyro is depicted as having the power to manipulate fire
    • Bobby is depicted as having the power to create ice
    • Jones is depicted as being able to change television channels by blinking
  • Magneto encourages another mutant with these words: "You are a god among insects. Never let anyone tell you different."
  • Since Nightcrawler, an ally of the X-Men, is portrayed as a devout Roman Catholic (see below), this film hereby esteems the Roman Catholic Church, which officially condemns the Protestant faith
  • Evolution is repeatedly referenced and promoted
  • At least one appeal to luck

Idolatry

This movie violates the Second Commandment, which forbids any visual representation of the Godhead, including the Son, who is both human and divine.

  • A large crucifix, wherein an idol of Jesus is hanging on a cross, is prominently displayed in a church
  • Nightcrawler gazes upon the aforementioned idol and says, "Perhaps he is testing me," prompting Jean and Storm to glance as well
  • Nightcrawler is portrayed as a devout Roman Catholic:
    • He is shown repeatedly holding a rosary
    • He is shown reciting the Hail Mary, the Lord's Prayer, and Psalm 23 (while holding his rosary)
    • In one scene he is shown crossing himself
    • His body is covered with tattoos which he calls "angelic symbols, passed on to mankind by the archangel Gabriel," and when asked how many, says, "one for every sin"

Blasphemy and Profanity

This movie violates the Third Commandment. God has warned that he will not hold guiltless those who take his name in vain (Ex. 20:7).

  • Xavier, Scott (Cyclops), Stryker and the actor portraying the US president each take God's name in vain at least once
  • Logan particularly takes God's name in vain by irreverently uttering "Jesus" at least once
  • Storm takes God's name in vain at least 3 times
  • Jean takes God's name in vain at least 2 times
  • Nightcrawler calls himself a "messenger of the devil" and "the spawn of evil" (in German)
  • Profane references: hell (6), damn (1), among others

Disdain for Authority

This movie promotes violations of the Fifth Commandment. Those who disobey parents are worthy of death according to the judgment of God (Rom. 1:30-32); those who despise government are likened to brute beasts who will be condemned (2Pe. 2:10-12; Jude 1:8-10).

  • Bobby reveals that he lied to his parents about his attendance at Xavier's school for mutants: "Actually, my parents think this is a prep school."
  • Back home, Bobby lies to his parents about Logan being his professor
  • When some of the younger mutants are instructed to remain on a jet, Pyro rebelliously leaves, and when reminded that they were told to stay, he responds "You always do what you're told?"
  • Feminism: Mystique and Yuriko are shown repeatedly fighting men

Immodesty and Sexual Immorality

This movie violates and promotes violations of the Seventh Commandment. The Bible warns that those who do not repent of sexual immorality will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10), but will be judged by God (Heb. 13:4). We are commanded to "flee fornication" (1Co. 6:18).

  • Scott (James Marsden, married) and Jean (Famke Janssen, unmarried) kiss
  • Mystique (Rebecca Romijn, married) and Prison Guard (Ty Olsson) are shown groping, making out, and getting undressed in a bathroom stall
  • Rogue (Anna Paquin, unmarried) and Bobby (Shawn Ashmore, unmarried) shown kissing
  • Logan (Hugh Jackman, married) grabs and starts kissing Jean, who is later shown on top of him, making out in his tent
  • Jean, despite her relationship with Scott, admits that she is willing to flirt with "the dangerous guy" like Logan
  • Mystique is shown nude (from shoulders up) on top of Logan
  • Storm (Halle Berry, married) is shown nude (from shoulders up) on top of Logan
  • Rogue is shown nude (from shoulders up) on top of Logan
  • Scott and Jean are depicted as an unmarried couple who sleep together in the same room
  • Logan continues to repeatedly seduce Jean despite her relationship with Scott and despite Scott warning him in the first film to "stay away from my girl."
  • Mystique is repeatedly nude, with her body fully exposed, apart from being painted blue; in one scene her buttocks is shown
  • Storm, Rogue, and Yuriko are repeatedly shown immodestly dressed, showing cleavage
  • In one scene Rogue is shown getting undressed in front of Bobby, who turns around yet glances back
  • There is a brief scene in which Logan is shown fully naked
  • Nightcrawler and Colossus are shown shirtless

Theft

This movie promotes violations of the Eighth Commandment. The Bible warns that unrepentant thieves will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10).

  • While in the first film Logan stole Scott's motorcycle, in this film he steals his car. When Bobby tells him, "This is Cyclops' car," he replies, "Oh yeah?" and uses his claw to start the engine.

Deceit

This movie promotes violations of the Ninth Commandment. The Bible warns that all liars, whom God hates (Pro. 6:16-19; 12:22), shall have their part in the lake of fire (Rev. 21:8).

  • Bobby reveals that he lied to his parents about his attendance at Xavier's school for mutants: "Actually, my parents think this is a prep school."
  • Back at home, when asked who Logan is, Bobby lies to his parents: "Uh, this is Professor Logan."
  • When Bobby's father asks him what he is a professor of, Logan lies by saying, "Art," in a scene intended to provoke laughter.
