The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Related: The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
This movie should be avoided because it involves and/or promotes profanity (at least 5 instances), blasphemy (God's name is taken in vain at least 9 times, along with 3 minced oaths), immodesty, sexual immorality, deceit, defiance against God, and disdain for authority. Since its heroes practice sin, this movie conditions viewers to substitute evil for good and good for evil (Isa. 5:20) by praising evildoers who ought to be despised (Ps. 15:4; Pro. 28:4).
Violations of God's Law
Defiance against God
This movie violates the First Commandment with a favorable reference to Astrology.
Blasphemy and Profanity
This movie violates the Third Commandment. God has warned that he will not hold guiltless those who take his name in vain (Ex. 20:7).
- Peter takes God's name in vain at least 2 times
- Peter's love interest Gwen takes God's name in vain at least 2 times
- Peter's aunt May takes God's name in vain at least 3 times
- One of the film's antagonists, Max, refers to himself as a god
- A security guard takes God's name in vain at least 1 time
- Profane references: hell (3), damn (1), among others
- Peter continues to make and break empty promises, including his promise to Gwen's dying father about staying away from Gwen. This film shows Peter wrestling with and violating a guilty conscience, who ultimately chooses to completely ignore it in pursuit of Gwen. Such betrayal and foolishness is presented as heroic, romantic, and true love for Gwen.
Disdain for Authority
This movie promotes violations of the Fifth Commandment. Those who disobey parents are worthy of death according to the judgment of God (Rom. 1:30-32); those who despise government are likened to brute beasts who will be condemned (2Pe. 2:10-12; Jude 1:8-10).
- Vigilantism: as a self-appointed masked vigilante, Spider-Man defies civil authority
- Peter repeatedly lies to his caretaker, his aunt
- Gwen defiantly demands that nobody makes decisions for her (which includes her father and Peter's promise)
Immodesty and Sexual Immorality
This movie violates and promotes violations of the Seventh Commandment. The Bible warns that those who do not repent of sexual immorality will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10), but will be judged by God (Heb. 13:4). We are commanded to "flee fornication" (1Co. 6:18).
- Peter (Andrew Garfield, unmarried) and Gwen (Emma Stone, unmarried) are shown kissing and making out throughout the movie. In once instance he asks her, "How'd you like it?"
- Peter deliberately pulls down a criminal's pants, exposing his boxers
- Peter is repeatedly shown shirtless
- Harry is shown shirtless
- Felicia shows breast cleavage
Deceit
This movie promotes violations of the Ninth Commandment. The Bible warns that all liars, whom God hates (Pro. 6:16-19; 12:22), shall have their part in the lake of fire (Rev. 21:8). Spider-Man continues to shamelessly lie repeatedly throughout this second film, inspiring fans to follow his example.
- Peter lies to his aunt in a drawn out scene that is meant to provoke laughter
- Peter lies to his love interest Gwen and to his friend Harry
- Peter lies about being a Harvard professor to help Gwen get accepted to a university
