The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Related: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
This movie should be avoided because it involves and/or promotes profanity (at least 7 instances), blasphemy (God's name is taken in vain at least 12 times), immodesty, sexual immorality, theft, deceit, defiance against God, and disdain for authority. Since its heroes practice sin, this movie conditions viewers to substitute evil for good and good for evil (Isa. 5:20) by praising evildoers who ought to be despised (Ps. 15:4; Pro. 28:4).
Violations of God's Law
Defiance against God
This movie violates the First Commandment by promoting evolution.
Blasphemy and Profanity
This movie violates the Third Commandment. God has warned that he will not hold guiltless those who take his name in vain (Ex. 20:7).
- Peter takes God's name in vain at least 6 times
- Peter's uncle Ben takes God's name in vain at least 1 time
- Peter's aunt May takes God's name in vain at least 2 times
- Profane references: hell (4), damn (1), among others
- Peter routinely makes empty promises and breaks them. Most significantly, before he dies, Gwen's father makes Peter promise to leave her alone, for her safety. But later when his school teacher admonishes him not to make promises he can't keep (he promised not to be tardy to class again), he whispers to Gwen, "Yeah, but those are the best kind," who afterwards begins to smile.
Disdain for Authority
This movie promotes violations of the Fifth Commandment. Those who disobey parents are worthy of death according to the judgment of God (Rom. 1:30-32); those who despise government are likened to brute beasts who will be condemned (2Pe. 2:10-12; Jude 1:8-10).
- Vigilantism: as a self-appointed masked vigilante, Spider-Man defies civil authority, whose official policy is to arrest him on sight
- Peter demands recognition from police officers for helping them do "80% of their job"
- Peter treats his caretakers, his aunt and uncle, shamefully and dismissively, lying to them and neglecting them
- While being admonished by his uncle, Peter raises his voice, walks out on him, and slams the door behind him (causing the glass to shatter)
- Peter argues with his aunt, refuses to answer her questions, and demands that she not stay up for him as he's frequently out late
- Peter challenges Gwen's father, gets into a heated argument with him
- Peter takes Gwen out for a night, in defiance to her parents
Immodesty and Sexual Immorality
This movie violates and promotes violations of the Seventh Commandment. The Bible warns that those who do not repent of sexual immorality will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10), but will be judged by God (Heb. 13:4). We are commanded to "flee fornication" (1Co. 6:18).
- Peter (Andrew Garfield, unmarried) and Gwen (Emma Stone, unmarried) are shown kissing and making out throughout the movie
- Uncredited actors portraying the "high school kissing couple" are making out, blocking Peter from accessing his locker (the scene is meant to provoke laughter)
- Peter rips off a woman's shirt (accidentally, from his newfound spider stickiness) where she is shown exposed in her bra
- Peter deliberately shoots webbing at a criminal's crotch, then laughs, "It is kind of funny, though."
- When Dr. Connors returns to human form, he is shown naked (bared torso in one instance, whole body briefly in another)
Theft
This movie promotes violations of the Eighth Commandment. The Bible warns that unrepentant thieves will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10). Spider-Man unrepentantly steals and sets a bad example for his fans.
- A criminal distracts a cashier and throws Peter his drink that he didn't have enough money to pay for; Peter takes it and leaves the store (the scene presents it as justifiable, since the cashier was rude to Peter)
- In order to gain access to the Oscorp building, Peter steals another person's badge and assumes his identity; the person is later shown crying for help while being escorted out of the building (the scene is meant to provoke laughter)
- Peter repeatedly trespasses into unauthorized areas, stealing the door code from an official, snooping in Dr. Connors' laboratory, etc.
Deceit
This movie promotes violations of the Ninth Commandment. The Bible warns that all liars, whom God hates (Pro. 6:16-19; 12:22), shall have their part in the lake of fire (Rev. 21:8). Spider-Man shamelessly lies repeatedly throughout the film, inspiring fans to follow his example.
- Peter lies to his aunt and uncle, to his love interest Gwen and her father, to officials, and to his colleagues
- Gwen lies to her father's face in order to keep him from coming into her room, where she's hiding Peter (the scene is meant to provoke laughter)
