Fantastic Four (2005)
Related: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
This movie should be avoided because it involves and/or promotes profanity (over 11 instances, including the profane swearing of oaths), blasphemy (God's name is taken in vain at least 15 times), defiance against God, disdain for authority, immodesty, sexual immorality, infidelity, and theft. Since its heroes practice sin, this movie conditions viewers to substitute evil for good and good for evil (Isa. 5:20) by praising evildoers who ought to be despised (Ps. 15:4; Pro. 28:4).
Violations of God's Law
Defiance against God
This movie violates the First Commandment.
- Victor refers to himself and the "Fantastic Four" as becoming gods due to the super powers they acquired
- Ben doubts God's existence, saying, "If there's a God, he hates me."
- When responding to Ben, Alicia refers to God as feminine: "She is not so into hate."
- Evolution is referenced and promoted
- At least two appeals to luck and fate
Blasphemy and Profanity
This movie violates the Third Commandment. God has warned that he will not hold guiltless those who take his name in vain (Ex. 20:7). God requires oaths to be sworn by his name (Deut. 6:13).
- Johnny takes God's name in vain at least 4 times, including uttering "Jesus" in vain, and joking about how Victor has "more money than God"
- Susan and Ben each take God's name in vain at least 3 times
- Victor and Debbie each take God's name in vain at least once
- Ben and Reed each swear a profane oath
- Profane references: hell (3), damn (4), among others
Disdain for Authority
This movie promotes violations of the Fifth Commandment. Those who despise parents are worthy of death according to the judgment of God (Rom. 1:30-32); those who despise government are likened to brute beasts who will be condemned (2Pe. 2:10-12; Jude 1:8-10).
- Johnny is repeatedly portrayed as rebellious
- Ben defies and flees from the police
- Susan is shown using her super powers to get past the police
Immodesty and Sexual Immorality
This movie violates and promotes violations of the Seventh Commandment. The Bible warns that those who do not repent of sexual immorality will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10), but will be judged by God (Heb. 13:4). We are commanded to "flee fornication" (1Co. 6:18).
- Johnny (Chris Evans, unmarried) is shown kissing a woman (Morgan Reynolds), while riding a motorcycle, so the scene is attempting to portray his promiscuity as "cool"
- Johnny is shown kissing a nurse (Maria Menounos, unmarried). He later invites her to get naked with him in a pool he created with his fire super power, and she accepts. In the next scene Johnny is shown naked, using her pink jacket to cover his crotch (intended to provoke laughter).
- Reed (Ioan Gruffudd, unmarried) and Susan (Jessica Alba, unmarried) are shown kissing
- Susan is repeatedly shown immodestly dressed, showing cleavage. In a scene meant to provoke laughter, she is shown in her bra and panties as she struggles with her new ability to turn invisible
- Johnny and Ben are shown shirtless
- Several immodestly dressed cheerleaders are shown surrounding Johnny, wearing crop-tops, miniskirts, and showing cleavage
- Reed and Susan are portrayed as having lived together as an unmarried couple
- A female reporter and Johnny make explicit sexual innuendos about Reed's stretching super power, at which several female bystanders giggle
- Alicia is shown feeling up Ben (in his rock form), rubbing his chest, neck, and face (because she's blind, that's how she "sees")
- Ben tries to persuade Reed to get back with Susan, even though she has been in a 2-year-long relationship with Victor. Despite her relationship with Victor and the fact that he proposed to her, Susan also pursues Reed, goes out with him alone, and encourages him to take charge in initiating their own relationship.
Theft
This movie promotes violations of the Eighth Commandment. The Bible warns that unrepentant thieves will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10).
- Ben is shown breaking into a store and stealing clothes
