Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
Related: Fantastic Four (2005)
The only thing fantastic (unreal) about this group of superheroes is the facade that they are a force for good, because each is portrayed as impenitent, deceptive, immoral, and profane.
This movie should be avoided because it involves and/or promotes profanity (over 16 instances), blasphemy (God's name is taken in vain at least 9 times), immodesty, sexual immorality, and theft. Since its heroes practice sin, this movie conditions viewers to substitute evil for good and good for evil (Isa. 5:20) by praising evildoers who ought to be despised (Ps. 15:4; Pro. 28:4).
Violations of God's Law
Blasphemy and Profanity
This movie violates the Third Commandment. God has warned that he will not hold guiltless those who take his name in vain (Ex. 20:7).
- Johnny takes God's name in vain at least 4 times
- Reed takes God's name in vain at least 3 times
- Ben and some woman each take God's name in vain at least once
- After the Silver Surfer is portrayed as causing unnatural occurrences, a news reporter says, "some are beginning to wonder if the hand of God is at work"
- Susan is portrayed as dying after being mortally wounded, but the Silver Surfer is shown raising her back to life
- Reed breaks his promise to Susan that he would focus on their wedding, not on his work, and proceeds to focus exclusively on his work behind her back
- Profane references: hell (4), damn (1), among others
Abuse, Violence, and Murder
This movie promotes violations of the Sixth Commandment. God hates those who love violence (Ps. 11:5). The Bible says those who hate are murderers, and no murderer has eternal life (1Jo. 3:15), and warns that drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of heaven (1Co. 6:9-10).
- At Reed's bachelor party, Ben is shown ordering a large quantity beer, and finishing off 3 full pitchers
- Ben expresses his delight in seeing Victor pummeled
Immodesty and Sexual Immorality
This movie violates and promotes violations of the Seventh Commandment. The Bible warns that those who do not repent of sexual immorality will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10), but will be judged by God (Heb. 13:4). We are commanded to "flee fornication" (1Co. 6:18).
- Reed (Ioan Gruffudd, unmarried) and Susan (Jessica Alba, unmarried) are shown kissing
- Ben (Michael Chiklis, married) and Alicia (Kerry Washington, unmarried) are shown kissing
- At one point in the film, Susan tells Reed, "I'm so hot for you right now."
- Johnny jokingly asks Ben how he and Alicia have sexual relations, due to his rock form, in a scene meant to provoke laughter
- When a reporter asks Johnny's girlfriend what it takes to date the "human torch," she replies, "Fireproof lingerie and alot of aloe." She is shown immodestly dressed, showing cleavage, and baring her legs
- Johnny is shown shirtless, naked with a towel, after a shower
- The Silver Surfer is basically naked, in a skin-tight latex costume
- Susan and Alicia, and many women are repeatedly shown immodestly dressed, showing cleavage, some wearing crop-tops, exposing legs, abdomens
- In a scene meant to provoke laughter, Susan temporarily receives Johnny's power, so that when she goes on fire, her clothes are burned off, leaving her completely naked, and her bodily contours, breasts and buttocks, are shown. When their powers revert, she falls to the ground, completely naked
- Johnny coaxes Reed to have a bachelor party, which is filled with immodestly dressed women. Reed, due to get married to Susan, is shown dancing with seductive women, who tell him, "Just loosen up, and have some fun." They dance to Nicole Scherzinger's song "Physical" playing in the background, which promotes sexual immorality with lyrics such as: "Let's dance, let's get physical, let's get emotional and take off our clothes." When Susan finds out, Reed tells her, "This was Johnny's idea, I just went along." Later on Susan tells him not to worry about it, congratulates him for having fun, and mentions how it was nothing compared to what she did for her bachelorette party.
- Johnny boasts of his promiscuity: "You think I'm jealous? Have you seen the women I've dated?"
Theft
This movie promotes violations of the Eighth Commandment. The Bible warns that unrepentant thieves will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10).
- Ben is shown in a store stealing clothes, just like in the first movie
Deceit
This movie promotes violations of the Ninth Commandment. The Bible warns that all liars, whom God hates (Pro. 6:16-19; 12:22), shall have their part in the lake of fire (Rev. 21:8).
- Reed deliberately lies to his friends' faces, to cover up his work undertaken in secret. After his secret work is revealed to Ben and Johnny, they agree not to tell Reed's fiancée Susan.
