Ant-Man (2015)
This movie should be avoided because it involves and/or promotes profanity (over 30 instances), blasphemy (God's name is taken in vain at least 4 times), theft and burglary, disdain for authority, immodesty, and deceit. Since its heroes practice sin, this movie conditions viewers to substitute evil for good and good for evil (Isa. 5:20) by praising evildoers who ought to be despised (Ps. 15:4; Pro. 28:4).
Violations of God's Law
Blasphemy and Profanity
This movie violates the Third Commandment. God has warned that he will not hold guiltless those who take his name in vain (Ex. 20:7).
- Scott, Hank, Hope, and Luis each take God's name in vain at least once
- Hank, through his network of ants and his ability to speak to them, attributes to himself omniscience and omnipresence
- There is a scene in which Scott's friends recoil at seeing him shrink, as he demonstrates the Ant-Man suit's abilities, and they carry on calling it "witchcraft," "sorcery," and "the work of gypsies," all of which is intended to provoke laughter. Witchcraft is a serious, damnable sin for which God has assigned capital punishment (Ex. 22:18).
- Profane references: hell (7), damn (10), among others
Disdain for Authority
This movie promotes violations of the Fifth Commandment. Those who despise parents are worthy of death according to the judgment of God (Rom. 1:30-32); those who despise government are likened to brute beasts who will be condemned (2Pe. 2:10-12; Jude 1:8-10).
- Scott and his friends Luis, Dave, and Kurt are confirmed, unashamed, and skilled career criminals
- After Scott is jailed for burglary, Hank delivers him the Ant-Man suit in order to break him out of jail, and he proceeds to flee from the authorities
- Scott's daughter Cassie expresses her hope that the police will not be able to find and catch him
- Hope is shown repeatedly opposing her father throughout the film, glaring at him at one point, and disparaging him behind his back to Scott
Immodesty and Sexual Immorality
This movie violates and promotes violations of the Seventh Commandment. The Bible warns that those who do not repent of sexual immorality will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10), but will be judged by God (Heb. 13:4). We are commanded to "flee fornication" (1Co. 6:18).
- Scott (Paul Rudd, married) and Hope (Evangeline Lilly, divorced) are shown embracing and kissing
- Hope is shown dressed immodestly, showing cleavage, all throughout the film. In one scene she is wearing form-fitting exercise clothes, and jumps on Scott, wrapping her legs around his neck, and taking him down in a sparring match
- Scott is shown shirtless, and Hope is shown gazing at his body
- A woman is shown sitting provocatively on a man's lap
- Luis gloats of a past sexual encounter he had with a woman named Emily
Theft
This movie promotes violations of the Eighth Commandment. The Bible warns that unrepentant thieves will not inherit the kingdom of God (1Co. 6:9-10). The heroes of this film are proud, confirmed thieves, and yet are explicitly hailed as "the good guys," and their crimes are always portrayed in a positive, humorous light.
- The film begins with Scott's release from being in prison for three years for "breaking and entering" and "grand larceny," crimes for which he is unrepentant
- Scott calls himself "a cat burglar" and "a good thief." He is congratulated and rewarded for successful burglaries
- Luis boasts about having "mad thieving skills," about how he stole not one but "two smoothie machines," and about being welcomed back to the same house he robbed
- Even though Scott tells others he has changed, he agrees to break into a man's home to steal what is in his safe. He and his friends Luis, Dave, and Kurt are shown preparing for the burglary and then carrying it out
- Dave is shown stealing a license plate from someone's car in a scene meant to provoke laughter
- Hank pleads with and ultimately convinces Scott to become the Ant-Man in order to "break into a place and steal" an item that he says needs to be destroyed in order to save the world
Deceit
This movie promotes violations of the Ninth Commandment. The Bible warns that all liars, whom God hates (Pro. 6:16-19; 12:22), shall have their part in the lake of fire (Rev. 21:8).
- Scott is fired for lying to his employer about his past, even his name, which he attempts to justify
- Hank is portrayed as having continuously lied in order to keep his involvement as Ant-Man a secret. When asked, he unashamedly claims it is "just a tall tale."
- Hope is shown scheming with Hank against Darren all throughout the film, whose trust she betrays. She takes advantage of the fact that she has his "complete trust." She is shown lying to him about her whereabouts.
- In order to help break Scott out of jail, Hank lies about being his lawyer
- At the end of the film, because the criminal Scott has "redeemed himself" by saving the world, Paxton (a police officer) lies to his captain about Scott being properly processed, in order to keep him from having to go back to jail
