Movies

Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law. … Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.

Psalm 119:53, 136

A great burden has been on my heart for years regarding the consumption by Christians of media which blasphemes God, despises his standard of holiness, and esteems and promotes sin, debauchery, and ungodliness. I have heard many excuses and justifications given, but I have never understood how such media can be, as it is ubiquitously claimed, a matter of "Christian liberty." I am now resolved that the reason why I have been unable to understand this is precisely because it, in fact, is not a matter of liberty—that it is never right to take pleasure in sin—and I aim to argue this both from Scripture and the testimony of godly men, as time permits.

Movie Analysis

I have often heard Christians justify various ungodly media with excuses such as, "It's just a movie," "It's not that bad," or "The underlying story is good." Without seeing the films in question, charity would demand taking these claims at face value and giving the benefit of the doubt. I aim, therefore, to analyze various samples of media and document instances of blasphemy, profanity, sexual immorality, and other vices that are promoted therein for the following reasons:

  • To remove the ambiguity and thus nullify the excuses
  • To inform others who are ignorant of what exactly is being promoted in popular media
  • To expose and reprove works of darkness (Eph. 5:11-13, Pro. 28:4, etc.)

Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.
